Your filing status is single if you are considered unmarried and you don’t qualify for another filing status.
You may be able to file as head of household if you meet all of the following requirements. 1. You are unmarried or considered unmarried on the last day of the year. 2. You paid more than half of the cost of keeping up a home for the year. 3. A qualifying person lived with you in the home for more than half the year (except for temporary absences, such as school). However, if the qualifying person is your dependent parent, he or she doesn't have to live with you.
You can choose married filing jointly as your filing status if you are considered married and both you and your spouse agree to file a joint return.
You can choose married filing separately as your filing status if you are married. This filing status may benefit you if you want to be responsible only for your own tax or if it results in less tax than filing a joint return.
If your spouse died in 2020, you can use married filing jointly as your filing status for 2020 if you otherwise qualify to use that status. The year of death is the last year for which you can file jointly with your deceased spouse.
